VDOE Identifies School Bus Compliance Issue

The Virginia Department of Education last week notified the commonwealth’s 132 school divisions that as many as 4,000 school buses may need retrofitting to install a safety device that prevents the parking brake from accidently disengaging. The device- a brake interlock- is required in all buses with automatic transmissions. CCPS transportation department has been in contact with the manufacture of our busses about the remedy for this situation. Since May 24th is the last day for students, most busses will be off the road until school re-opens. According to Sonny Merryman Inc., delivery of the needed component is expected to be delivered by mid to late June. CCPS has been assured that every effort will be made to ensure that all busses will be in compliance by the August 14th start date for students in 2017.
